This is the bus with the trademark ‘smiley face’ front. It is easily recognized as an iconic post war people mover.
In 1948, we had William Lyon Mackenzie King running our country and the US had Harry Trueman. John Ritter, Prince Charles and Ozzy Osborn were born. The average income was $2950 with baby boomers buying houses for about $7700. They spent .16 cents/gallon on gas for a new car that would have cost $1250. The population was exploding and it seemed everyone was buying their own TV. They could still go to the movies for .60 cents but they could instantly see themselves on film if they saved for the all new modern Instant Image Polaroid Camara costing $89.75.
Taking the bus in 1948 cost about $1/wk and people may very well have been riding in a Flxible Bus.
Today, we covet these iconic vintage buses and the RV Restorations that have made them into tiny homes. The one we enjoyed touring was actually restored to be in the movie, RV, featuring Robin Williams. How cool is that, right? I wanted to include a link to another amazing 1963 Flxible Bus to RV conversion that totally blew my mind.
